Tamara, was a nurse working 12-hour shifts, and he watched her buy shoe after shoe trying to find one that could keep up with her job, only to have each pair fall apart, wear out, or just never feel right. In 2019, he decided to build the shoe she actually needed himself. The name "Clove" comes from medical shorthand: the letter C with a line over it means "with" on a patient chart, and Joe paired that with the word "love."

Before launching, the Clove team spent over 2,000 hours testing prototypes inside a real Philadelphia hospital.
